Our Mission in Ethiopia

People have asked us what we are eating here..... We have been going to lunch with the Preators most days and having our bigger meal at noon then just soup or something light at night.  The fruits (see my mango, pineapple, banana drink above) and veggies here are really good! The avocados and carrots are HUGE.  The bananas are too ripe but good in muffins.  Apples are pretty good and we had a good grapefruit for breakfast this morning.  We found YUMMY Raisin Bran and granola cereal a couple of days ago but it was $6 / box!  We are still looking for GOOD peanut butter and for brown sugar and chocolate chips but no luck. (Note: We JUST got back from lunch at Bro. Wright's (U.S. Embassy) and he gave us BROWN SUGAR from the commissary!! Woo hoo!  Too bad he is heading home in October.... : /)

The meat is a little scary (see the animal ~ a lamb? ~ in the meat case at a market!!) .... but it's pretty good in some restaurants.  The plate shown was our meal at the Selam Orphanage.  It was a 5 course meal, fixed and served by teenage girls from the orphanage.  YUM!  Besides the plate, we had a little taste of pasta, salad, soup and dessert!  The picture at the bottom shows us at the Hilton Hotel for lunch on Thursday with the two other senior couples in Addis ~ Campbells on the left from Hurricane,UT and Preators on the right from Burlington, Wyo.  (The fourth couple, the Tanners from Canada are 3 1/2 hours away in Awassa.)  My caesar salad was NOT good but they liked their tomato soup.  Our chicken fajitas were yummy and I almost cried when they brought out a HOT FUDGE banana split for us to share!!! Ice cream here is about $30 / for less than a gallon....Their bread and rolls are REALLY good here!! Yippee! (I doubt I am going to lose any weight! : / )

  1. Joyce...I read you comment about the lack of brown sugar. This might help...if you can find molasses

    Brown sugar couldn't be easier to make. Grab a bowl, and give it a try!

    Difficulty: Easy

    Time Required: 5 minutes

    Here's How:
    1. Measure one cup of granulated sugar and one tablespoon of molasses into a mixing bowl.
    2. Stir with a fork until completely mixed. Your brown sugar is now ready for use!
    Tips:
    1. To make dark brown sugar, increase the molasses to two tablespoons.

  2. Thanks Jeanne! I haven't seen molasses at all either.... but I will remember that! We DID get some brown sugar after I wrote this, from an LDS guy who works at the Embassy and goes to the Commissary! Too bad he goes home in October..... : /

  3. Joyce ask him to get you a supply before he goes. Our embassy guy got us some good chicken when we were there. We love lds embassy people. We even got a crock pot from one couple. It worked wonders on the etiopian meat.

      That is a GOOD idea! We'll have to talk to him about that. His family has gone home so he's alone.... We'll see what he may have that he doesn't want to take back. We'd be happy to BUY a crockpot from him!! Do you have any great recipes with the ingredients found here? : D
      We're not in our own place yet.... Everything takes SOOOOOO long here!! We hope to sign a contract tomorrow or Thurs. when we go down to Debre Zeyit but the house needs some finishing up before we can move in.... Bro. Jackson, the artist in Meganagna sure thinks a LOT of you two!!! Several others have fond memories of you!!

    are you sure the meat they called Lamb is lamb?

    I was told that when they say Lamb they actually mean goat.

    just like when you ask for a lemon (Lom-a) they bring you a lime?

    It seems there are billions of goats in Ethiopia and i have seen very little sheep?

  7. REALLY!? Oh my! I don't think I'll try it.... We saw packages of goat meat AND lamb in BAMBI'S Market today... We HAVE seen LOTS of sheep around here. Every morning there are sheepherders out and about. The Preators taught us that tails up are goats and tails down are sheep! : D We're in an area called "Summit" ~ kind of near the Bole International Airport.
